JOB INTERVIEW FOLLOW-UP “THANK YOU” NOTES
One of the most important parts of interviewing is following up with a “Thank You” note. A thoughtfully expressed “thank you” affirms your interest in the position and company, helps to keep your candidacy top of mind as final hiring decisions are made, and demonstrates proactive communication skills. When it comes time to write your job interview follow-up “thank you” notes, keep these tips front of mind:
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
- Be prompt and send your “Thank You” note as soon as possible, within 24 hours
- In order to ensure prompt delivery to the recipient(s), send your “Thank You” note via email
- If you are instructed to send your “Thank You” email(s) directly to your recruiter for them to forward to the interviewer(s), ensure to do so
- Prepare an interview follow-up “Thank You” note for each person that you interviewed with
- If you interviewed with multiple people, personalize each email, and add variation to avoid the copy-and-paste effect
- Your interview follow-up “Thank You” note should be positive, personal, professional, and sincere
- Keep your interview follow-up “Thank You” email brief and to-the-point
- Use a professional subject line (example: Thank You – [Job Title, Your First & Last Name])
- Proofread, checking your spelling and grammar
- If you do not have a second set of eyes available to proofread for you, utilize a tool like Grammarly for proofing
WHAT TO INCLUDE:
- Open with a personal greeting
- Express your appreciation, above all else, for the interviewer’s time and consideration
- Confirm your interest in the position; reiterate why you are interested and why are a good fit
- Confirm your desire to work for the company; reiterate why you are interested and why you are a good fit
- Reiterate your qualifications
- Mention specific topics that you discussed with the interviewer and why you enjoyed discussing them
- Include a link to your LinkedIn profile (only do so if your LinkedIn is professional and up to date)

WHAT TO AVOID:
- Do not overwrite – interview follow-up “thank you” notes should be brief and to-the-point
- Do not be too casual; despite the tone of your interview, maintain a professional presentation
- Do not send anything that could reflect unfavorably on you; err on the side of caution and do not include any of the following:
- Personal social media account links (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.)
- Memes, images, emojis
- Internet/text abbreviations/acronyms, internet slang
